Playa del Carmen Hotel Reviews

I never make hotel reservations when visiting Playa del Carmen. There are plenty of hotel rooms available in town. It has been my experience that you get a better rate if you do not reserve hotel rooms ahead of time. If you are worried about it, you can book a room for one night before you go, and look around at hotels once you get there.

The small hotels on this page are ones I've stayed in, toured, or that friends stay at on a regular basis. I've also chosen the hotels that are in great locations, right in Playa del Carmen, a short walk to the beach, restaurants, and nightlife. Playa del Carmen has an abundant selection of hotels to suit every budget. Clean and cheap, small hotels can be found for 20 US dollars a night. It is still possible to have inexpensive Caribbean vacations in the Mayan Riviera.

Upscale, luxury boutique hotels in Playa del Carmen are available for approximately 120 US dollars a night, and up. For those on a less restrictive budget, there are several nice beach hotels to choose from.

These hotel reviews contain only hotels I believe to be worth the the rates being charged, and that have pictures that adequately reflect how the hotel actually looks. Please keep in mind that the hotels in Playa may have several different types of rooms, so if you don't like the one you are shown, ask to see another.

There are still plenty of other popular hotels that I have toured around the area or have general knowledge of. Please feel free to ask here if you have any questions .

Hotel Posada Freud
HOTEL POSADA FREUD
$44.00 and up
Cute and charming, I stayed in this room and loved the decorating, balcony, and small outdoor bar. The room had a mini-fridge and air-conditioning. Posada Freud also has a large Penthouse Suite for groups. Located right on 5th Avenue near everything.

Hotel Eclipse
HOTEL ECLIPSE
$40.00 and up
The Hotel Eclipse has several different styles of rooms ranging from a basic room, to the Palapa Suites shown in the picture. I thought the Palapa roof suites were really cool rooms. The Eclipse is located just off of 5th Avenue, near the Blue Parrot, towards the beach.

Sergio's Hotel

SERGIO'S HOTEL
$40.00 and up
Not fancy, but, for 40.00 per night, we had a huge, wraparound balcony with a nice view of the Caribbean sea all to ourselves. The room was modestly decorated, but had color TV w/cable, a mini-fridge, and AC. There is no front desk-so to speak. The liquor store downstairs serves as the "front desk", so when the liqour store is closed-you're on your own. The gated entrance is locked at night, for security. You'll get a key to the gate at check-in. Sergio's is located right on 5th Avenue, close to the bus station.

Hotel Rosa Mirador

HOTEL ROSA MIRADOR
$40.00 and up

I've not seen the inside of Rosa Mirador, but friends of mine stayed there and said it was simple and clean. They got a room during low-season for 20.00 a night. They also have a large suite with 4 double beds that goes for 100.00 a night in high season. Rosa Mirador is close to the beach and the Blue Parrot.

Hotel Cohiba

HOTEL COHIBA
$75.00 and up
The rooms with canopy beds are are quite cute. Hotel Cohiba has a penthouse room with a rooftop, private balcony. It's also a nice place to sit outside and have breakfast at their restaurant. Hotel Cohiba is located just off of 5th Avenue, towards the beach and near the Blue Parrot.

Hotel Kinbe

HOTEL KINBE
$50.00 and up
The rooms we saw at Hotel Kinbe were cozy, with modern decorating touches. You can also get a suite that has a king-sized bed and a double bed for 80.00. Hotel Kinbe is just off of 5th Avenue, towards the beach and in the heart of downtown.

Hotel Deseo

HOTEL DESEO
$148.00 and up
Artsy, cool, eclectic and funky. Hotel Deseo is for anybody who wants an ultra-chic, modern hotel. The rooms surround the outdoor, rooftop bar, which is a don't miss place to have a few drinks. Hotel Deseo is located on right on 5th Avenue.

El Sol del Caribe

EL SOL DEL CARIBE
$40.00 and up
We enjoyed the balcony overlooking 5th Avenue. This room is spacious, and has a full-size refridgerator, microwave and AC. El Sol del Caribe it is a good deal, if you can get a balcony room. You aren't allowed to take your room key off-site, and must leave it/pick it up at the front desk when you come and go, El Sol del Caribe is located right in the middle of 5th Avenue.

Mosquito Blue

MOSQUITO BLUE
$130.00 and up
This pretty, romatic boutique hotel is one of my favorites that I have toured. The rooms are very tastefully decorated. Mosquito Blue's hotel grounds are lovely, filled with lush foliage, ambient lighting, two swimming pools and lots of unique little sitting areas. Mosquito Blue is located just off of 5th Avenue, across from the Deseo Hotel.

Hotel Vista Caribe

HOTEL VISTA CARIBE
$75.00 and up
I like their master kitchenette suites. It's a great place for two couples sharing a room. The two-level suites have a king-sized bed and bathroom on each floor, offering some space from the person/s you are sharing a room with. The hotel has a swimming pool in the courtyard. Hotel Vista Caribe is located right on 5th Avenue.

Hotel Colibri

HOTEL COLIBRI
$60.00 and up
The Colibri has cabana rooms for 60.00 a night, and double rooms starting at 72.00 a night. The hotel is a favorite among regular visitors. Hotel Colibri is located on the beach close to the Blue Parrot.

Hotel Bananas Cabanas

HOTEL BANANAS CABANAS
$45.00 and up
This room with two single beds was 59.00 a night in high season. There was a ceiling fan, but no A/C, or television. Our room had a balcony with views of 5th Avenue and the ocean. Double rooms overlooking a tropical courtyard are available for 80.00 a night and have A/C. In addition, the hotel also features thatched-roof cabana units and kitchenette suites.

In 2004, the prices for the above rooms were 45.00 and 59.00, respectively. At the time it was a decent deal. In 2005, the prices have gone up to the ones listed here. I think you can do better, but I'll leave it here for now, as it is clean and OK if you are in a pinch to find a room.

Hotel Bananas Cabanas is located on 5th Avenue at Calle 6.

Lab Nah Hotel

LAB NAH HOTEL
$40.00 and up
The rooms I toured at Lab Nah were cozy in size, but clean. The hotel grounds are pretty, with a small swimming pool. While not directly on the beach, Lab Nah has ocean view rooms for 69.00 a night along with junior suites. Lab Nah is located just off of 5th Avenue, towards the beach on Calle 6.

Baal Nah Kah

BAAL NAH KAH
$34.00 and up
Baal Nah Kah Bed and Breakfast is for sale and not currently operating as a B&B.
